Did you know that California's National Guard once had a Navy? Once known as the Naval Battalion of the National Guard, and later as the California Naval Militia, California's Navy also had one of this nation's first aero squadrons and a Marine Corps detachment. The California Naval Militia would later pave the way for the formation of today's U.S. Naval Reserve, providing that organization with its first Admiral.
